urban farming: mini corn field

Urban farming at it’s best!   Someone in the UWS is utilizing those sidewalk planters for something more than just flowers.  Best idea ever to plant some corn out there.  Corn on the cob sounds delish right now!

the sugar lump crop

Picked the first batch from the sugar lump tomato “crop”.  Urban farming is delicious, sweet and tasty.

my sugar lumps_tomatoes!

They’re finally turning red!!!  Purchased a small tomato plant seedling from the Union Square Farmers’ Market probably a month ago.  It was of the “sugar lump” or “Gardener’s Delight” (looked it up online…haha) variety.  They are little baby tomatoes/cherry tomatoes. The plant was less than a foot tall when I bought it and now it’s 3-4 ft tall. Insane!  After watching the blossoms turn to tiny pea sized tomatoes, it seemed like it was going to take forever for them to turn red, but finally they are getting ripe.  Looking forward to adding them to my salads. Definitely really rewarding to grow your own food to eat.  Have a bell pepper plant starting to grow. Hope that works out too

medical herbman cafe project_EARTHSCAPE

Giant traveling human-shaped herb garden designed by Japanese Landscape design studio, EARTHSCAPE.

The garden arrives in shipping containers which converts into a shop and cafe.

The herbs that are planted within the body’s outline are either herbs that benefit that part of the body or are herbs native to that particular local.  The money earned is donated to building playgrounds in developing countries.

3 different locations in Japan have been visited by the herbman and more will come in the future.

Really great idea and great cause.

growing jewelery_hafsteinn juliusson

I can now water my jewelery!  I love rings and thought this was a really cute idea.  Designer, Hafsteinn Juliusson, has made a line of jewelery called “Growing Jewelery” that incorporates growing moss in a silver ring setting.  They are limited edition and supposedly the moss can last up to 12 weeks if cared for properly.  Jewelery + Gardening!  Mist, mist. mist!  Fun and quirky idea. 🙂

basil_wk 1

Planted some FREE basil seeds that were being given out at the Union Square Farmer’s Market.  Here they are at the end of week 1 (above).  Lots of sprouts.  Only the strongest sprouts will survive…which ones will they be?

Next to the new sprouts is the basil plant I started from a seedling I got from the Farmer’s Market too.  Give them something to aspire too  🙂

Garlic chives

Wanted to try growing some plants on the perch of the apartment.  So started by getting some garlic chives (top) and rosemary (bottom) seedlings and planting them.  Got some free basil seed packets that were being handed out at the Farmer’s Market in Union Square this week.  Planted them today.  Can’t wait for them to grow.

biodegradable moss carpet

Japan-based flower artist Makoto Azuma collaborated with Unitika Ltd. to create an indoor glade at the 2009 Milan Furniture Fair that is a completely biodegradable system.  The planter portion of this moss carpet system is made from plant-derived polylactic acid fiber that decomposes in 10 years leaving only CO2 and water that will be absorbed by plants in the end. Very cool and very earth conscious.  Original article from Inhabitat.

happy earth day!
