growing jewelery_hafsteinn juliusson

I can now water my jewelery!  I love rings and thought this was a really cute idea.  Designer, Hafsteinn Juliusson, has made a line of jewelery called “Growing Jewelery” that incorporates growing moss in a silver ring setting.  They are limited edition and supposedly the moss can last up to 12 weeks if cared for properly.  Jewelery + Gardening!  Mist, mist. mist!  Fun and quirky idea. 🙂

Planted some FREE basil seeds that were being given out at the Union Square Farmer’s Market.  Here they are at the end of week 1 (above).  Lots of sprouts.  Only the strongest sprouts will survive…which ones will they be?

Next to the new sprouts is the basil plant I started from a seedling I got from the Farmer’s Market too.  Give them something to aspire too  🙂

Some examples of the various flowers and vegetation you can see up on the Highline.  And along the way you will see these little signs asking you to “Keep It Wild.  Keep On the Path”, which is ever so slightly sad because one of my favorite things about parks is being able to sit on the grass and you can’t really do that here, but that’s ok.  Still a really great place to be!!

Domsai is “a tamagotchi for your desk” by Matteo Cibic.  Each dome contains a cactus and is tailor-made and blown to have it’s own personality–often mimicing it’s contents.

I need to find me one of these for my desk! Fun design!  Like cute litte aliens.

biodegradable moss carpet

mossplanter-1

Japan-based flower artist Makoto Azuma collaborated with Unitika Ltd. to create an indoor glade at the 2009 Milan Furniture Fair that is a completely biodegradable system.  The planter portion of this moss carpet system is made from plant-derived polylactic acid fiber that decomposes in 10 years leaving only CO2 and water that will be absorbed by plants in the end. Very cool and very earth conscious.  Original article from Inhabitat.

Tulips are my favorite flower so it made me smile when I saw these.  Very spring like for a warm spring day. 🙂

the plants that just keep on growing…

parsley egg

parsley pot

basil

 (images by: vivien chin)

So for a Secret Santa Xmas 2007 Jeannie got me one of those plants that you grow in an egg shaped, ceramic container (picture 1).  It was pretty cute and I thought it was awesome to have the little guy around on my desk.  The Italian parsley started to out grow the egg so I repotted it (picture 2, taken this morning) and it is still growing today!  I have no idea how and I haven’t added any fertilizer or any plantfood to help it.  I didn’t think it would last this long.  The base of the parsley plants are so thick now that they look more like parsley trees than anything else.

The other plant is my basil plant in my apartment (picture taken this last weekend).  It’s practically the same age as the parsley.  I purchased it at the Union Square Farmer’s Market as a super tiny seedling.  These 2 plants are amazing.  Will they make it to another Xmas?  I don’t see why not?  SUPERPLANTS!!!

Here’s one of the sites I’ve found that sells the little egg plants if you want to get one yourself. They have all different kinds of plants:  www.elsewares.com
